Fir Vale Healthy Living Centre. Sector: Community. Value: £480k. Client: Aspiring Communities Together. ACT identified a local need for a centre offering healthy living support and affordable fitness facilities that would be more culturally appropriate to the local BME community than the commercial gyms in the city. We helped with a successful Big Lottery application and developed a scheme to refurbish and adapt unused parts of a former Earl Marshal School building. A gym, multi-purpose studio and supporting spaces, configured to allow flexible use without genders mixing, was carved out of the basement of this concrete-framed building, along with treatment and consultation rooms available for local health practitioners to bring their services to the heart of the community. We proposed taking over an unleased and unused circulation area adjacent to the building's entrance to provide a reception and naturally-lit space for the cafe and teaching kitchenette. This has gaven the whole building - parts of which are also leased to Sheffield College and used by the Fir Vale Preschool and other ACT activities - an inviting entrance and a wayfinding focal point it previously lacked.
